David & Rachel’s Townhouse (#223)
Comfort and convenience in the centre of Monterchi, home to the Madonna del Parto. Perfect self-contained accommodation for two couples.
The small township of Monterchi sits on a small hill just above the plain of the river Cerfone. It encompasses the hill completely and thus the town still retains its spiral medieval street plan. Remnants of its castle and original fortifications still remain at the top of the town.
The house is on three levels, only a few yards from the main square and a well-stocked enoteca. Typical of the houses in the old town, it has original wooden ceiling beams, terracotta floors and stone doorways. Two of the rooms on the first floor have stuccoed ceiling friezes, and one still has the patterned tile floor typical of many of the oldest houses.
There are two double bedrooms on the top floor and a generous bathroom with a spectacular view. The two living rooms below provide ample space to either relax, watch a bit of television, or dine together. On the ground floor there is a well-appointed kitchen with both a gas and wood-fired stove(Aga fans rejoice) where simple meals can be prepared on the run or proper dinners can be planned and executed. There is also another large bathroom on the ground floor.
For one or two couples planning a walking or biking holiday, mixed with a little culture and good food this is an excellent choice. The famous Madonna del Parto (Pregnant Madonna) by Piero della Francesco is located close by, and throughout summer there are free classical concerts every Wednesday in the grounds of the Madonna museum. There are good local restaurants, fruit and vegetable shops and supermarket plus an open air market every Sunday.
Monterchi is in a gentle and largely unspoilt valley, with many similar small towns nearby. Citerna, Lippiano, and Monte Santa Maria Tiberina are all within 5 - 10 minutes drive. Larger centres such as Anghiari, Sansepolcro and Città di Castello are only a little further away and yet Monterchi enjoys the complete peace of the countryside.

The townhouse is generally rented on a weekly basis but may subject to availability be rented on a daily basis for a minimum of 3 nights.
