Cristina’s Central Apartment (#322)
Tastefully appointed and functional, right in the historical centre of Monte San Savino, this apartment is strategically located with many places of interest in easy reach.
Entrance on a classic cobbled street with a flight of stone stairs that lead to the open plan kitchen/dining area that features a traditional stone fireplace. There is also a sofa and a TV, no satellite, but with so many places to explore you won’t miss it! Cristina has put in an attractive and functional kitchen and she always stocks it thoughtfully with essentials. Also on the first floor is a newly redecorated bathroom with shower.
Another stone staircase leads to the upper level that hosts a spacious double bedroom and en suite bathroom also with shower. Next door is a single room with a loft above that features another single bed and enjoys a view over the terracotta tiled roofs and down to the valley. The single rooms do not offer much privacy so ideally suited to 2 siblings alternatively just one person travelling with a couple. The apartment rates particularly for a group of 4 are very reasonable taking this factor into account.
The town of Monte San Savino is on a gentle hill overlooking the Chiana valley that is famous for its Chianina cattle and indeed quality Chianina steaks feature on all the local restaurant menus. The town has a number of Churches, castles and other palazzi of interest well worth visiting and is just minutes from the Strada del Vino.the ancient road that leads from the Chianti Colli Aretini wine region to the famous Chianti Classico wine district between Florence and Siena. As well as a good range of restaurants, there are plenty of interesting specialty shops and bars. The homemade gelato at the bar just outside the main gate is just divine and some claim the Gelaterias in the historical centre are even better.
The town is strategically located just minutes from the main A1 motorway that links Rome and Milan and the city of Arezzo [10 minutes] is on the main intercity rail line meaning that Day Trips to Florence are effortless and stress free. The famous town of Cortona is only 20 mins by car and the city of Siena is only a 40 minute drive from Monte San Savino. En route is the significant castle and borgo of Castello di Gargonza finally restored in the 1970’s in order to preserve its valuable architecture.
In easy reach is also the Poetry Museum well worth a visit even just to see the beautiful vaulted ceilings. It may also be rented for wedding receptions and other special events. Also in close proximity are the ancient thermal baths ‘Terme Antica Querciolaia’ where today you can treat yourself to everything from facials, mud treatments for cellulite to relaxing massages.
Monte San Savino has a rich history that features many turbulent periods. After a long and bitter war between the Florentines and Aretini in 1289 it became part of the Florentine Republic. However in 1325 it was conquered by nearby Arezzo and then just a decade later it was again under Florentine rule. This continued until 1384 when both MSS and Arezzo passed to Florentine rule.
The town is believed to be of Etruscan origin but it would seem that no historian is prepared to declare this to be absolutely written in stone ...
